I have a 1988 Thunderbird TC 5-Speed and i am still using the stock vam. I plan on using quarterhorse to tune the car and im wondering if there is anything else i need (other than a laptop) to go along with the quarterhorse to begin tuning the car...
any helpful suggestions would be great...

I don't have any personal experience with the QH but you should still need the software side of things. As far as I know the QH is a chip/burner/datalogger only. This means you need the software to communicate with it and to read bin files and modify them. This could be their burn1 software, pcmx, binary editor, etc.

A Megasquirt ecu.
I used to use a F3 chip and PCMX software but that was years ago when the QH wasn't available and other software options weren't used much.

Ok man thanks for all of the info... I am now leaning towards the F3 setup since it is cheaper and i dont mind the extra effort put into tuning with it. I will post a video of my 88 TC soon!

The ability to datalog is a HUGE benefit with tuning...I'd get the QH if you can afford it....that's what I'd get if I were to use the stock ecu again.

Is it really necessary to upgrade the ECU from my SVO if I were to go to a Quarter Horse tuning set up? I see where people say that an ECU from an 88 t/c is faster, but can enough tuning still be done with the stock unit from my 85 SVO?

As long as a bin file is available then your stock ecu is fine. Just remember you have a P series ECU and most of the current tuning is done on the L series.

Do the Binary Editor and EEC Analyzer still cost $130 or are they free to download? I went to the site and it looked like they were free to download...

I believe it's "free". They let you download it but general courtesy says leave $20 or so... something like that.

i think when you download them, you have to register the programs to use some of the functions. i loaded them onto my old lap top before it crashed to play with the programs, and some of the functions were limited. i think the registration costs but i could be very wrong.

Well here is an update... My quaterhorse arrived yesterday and so did my wideband and gauge. I have downloaded EEC Analyzer and Binary Editor and have been reading through how to use these programs and I have a good understanding of how they work. My question is where can I download a tune to start with for the quarterhorse?

You just need to get a stock bin file for your ecu. Should be relatively easy to find, or you can send a pm to svojohn on this forum and see if he can point you in the right direction.

OK Update... I have everything installed in my thunderbird as mentioned above... I have the correct def. file and bin. file for my car on BE and when I download the tune to the ecu the car runs great (with my laptop still plugged into the ecu), but it barely runs when I unplug my laptop from the ecu... So im guessing that the tune is not saving to the ecu. I have checked my setup in BE for quaterhorse and im pretty sure I have everything setup correctly ( its in mode 2 for 8 single bank tunes ). so here is a short video i made of this occuring and I know you cant see the computer screen well in the vid so I have a printscreen of what it looks like to go along with video.  |
