I came across a guy name Charlie Brown at Evergreen Turbo and he quoted me $220 to have my turbo rebuilt, under/over size machining, and balance included. I need your input on something.
My 1.9 is tuned with the Garrett T3 .48/.60 and ran good till it leaked. Turbo begins spooling around 2850 RPMs and full boost comes in at around 3500 RPM. Should I have the Garrett rebuilt, OR, should I send the guy my IHI T3 from the Thunderbird?
Note: My car is a street car weighing in at 1900 lbs with minor strip use and I am shooting for 200 FWHP (Connecting rod limitation is around 250).

If you send a turbo to Charlie, DO NOT under ANY circumstances let him talk you into modifying the turbo in any way. He tends to talk people into "upgrading" to a POS T04B compressor wheel and a "clipped" turbine wheel. All this does is make the compressor surge and delay boost response because it kills turbine efficiency. He's the only person I've seen that does these turbo mods this century and they perform like crap.
Which turbo to run depends on how satisfied you were with how the T3 built boost, where the torque peak was relative to available traction, etc. Both turbos will support 200hp without issue. The IHI reaches full boost about 500-700rpm sooner than a T3 on a 2.3L.

He did ask about putting a smaller turbine wheel to the T3 to reduce lag but cost $280 more. I said no just rebuild it stock and balance. PS, I think I have found a job in NC. Will know more next week. One step closer to a house and garage, and your new CAS system.

I decided to go with the Garrett T3 rebuild. Before I send it, do you guys rebuild turbos?
