Yea, I am still thinking about pulling the motor to have it Decked and replacing rings and all the bottom end stuff? Studs all the way.

I agree about measuring the deck, I just measured mine on my SVO and it's .002 or so too low on the intake side of the #2 and #3 cylinders...no wonder those headgaskets blew so easy.

its easy to over look when putting a motor together. its generally something that does not need to be done if its a low-milage motor.

Yep, I found reason enough for me to pull the motor. My home made catch can had a quart of oil in it and I had just cleaned it out about a week before it blew. Now on to the rings. I used the gap-less send on the build. I want to try different ones I have been looking at Sealpower standard gap plasma-Molly ZR1051530? Any ideas? And yes it will be checked and re-decked.

Blowing the headgasket can fill the catch can so I'm not all that shocked there.
I'll let Matt post about the rings. We did a ton of research trying to figure out which stock replacement rings were the best before he built his engine for the white car. I can't remember the part number but he has it.

When I stuck my engine together I used a lot of cheap wear items, of course added the crowers and for rings I used the reg ole Sealed Power E441k that were about $60. The first year and 35 passes it was fine but the second year, after the swap to the HX40, it started loosing compression. Naturally we thought the rings lost tension causing 2 cylinders to go away. When I did the leakage test on the stand the 2 bad cyls were 35% and the good 2 were 3%. The rings had lined up to cause the issue. I repositioned them correctly stuck them back in to find the compression came right back. So I think even those rings can be fine for higher hp as long as you position them correctly (didn't do) and get the right hone per sealed power suggestion (didn't do).

I am planning to push about 480hp. I saw that set (E441K) but will this set work with the weisco pistons? I not sure that is why I did not use them the first time. I'll pull the motor tomorrow for tear down.

pulling the bottom is probably the smartest choice. it may end a lot of headaches down the road.

That is what I am hoping to accomplish. this time lol..

Wiseco uses the stock ring pack dimensions so any "stock replacement" rings will fit.

Eh yeah I think I agree.
Regardless, I would check the clearances between ring and piston groove.

Well that the good part, I started to get the motor ready to pull and I gave the crank a few turns and found scarring on the block for #2 piston close to the top of the passenger side wall? I am not so sure a hone will clean it up now. I am thinking about getting a different block . It's a never ending......

well...yeah theres always a bright side. If you end up going a different route that stuff may be good to hone and rering and keep for a possible later project. Then get another block and some CP pistons and you're ring issue is solved lol
