First off its probably noteworthy that my guage has showed that i only get about 6 lbs of boost since i got the car, i thought the guage was wrong and im still not sure. The other day my turbo started making a strange noise, kind of like it was spooling down with something touching one of the blades, like a high pitched zzzzz sound. I keep driving it for a couple days, i hear a sound like a bullet ricocheting, now im getting oil smoke out my exhuast like mad. Did i lose a bearing or something? Im almost positive the turbo is passing the oil, but its still boosting like it always has. It concerns me because i dont have the money for a turbo right now, if i cant fix this cheaply, then im gonna have to park my bird for a while.

Sounds just like mine did a while ago...before it shelled out. Pull the vam hose and angled compressor housing inlet pipe and you should have access to the compressor blades/shaft. Test it by spinning it and moving the shaft side to side. If it moves significantly or makes any sounds when twisting, you probably have a bearing problem or worse. Good luck. www.svomustang.blogspot.com

damn, is this a rebuildable condition? If so is it possible for someone at home to rebuild one of these? I know nothing about turbo's but i guess ill learn if i can find a rebuild kit.

Yes and no. Physically its possible, but it isn't an easy thing to do. I think on a budget you might have to look at a ebay/used unit. You can go back to the IHI turbo that you have or find a used SVO turbo (T3). Remember other turbos from regular Mustangs, Merkurs and earlier TC's have a different compressor housing do to the fact that they don't have an intercooler setup. Most ppl I know go to Evergreen for a full on rebuild. www.svomustang.blogspot.com

When they make the dreaded ZZZZ sound they are out of the realm of a "cheap" rebuild because at that point, the compressor wheel needs replaced, as well as the bearings/seals at minimum. This puts a rebuild at $160+ which is more than a used stock turbo can be bought for.

I would like to know where you are finding this used turbo for less than 160, we'd have turbos on everything for that price around here Thank you 88turbo, i patiently await you finding something Ive searched high and low in my area and there is ONE turbo coup in a junkyard close but its stripped already. And ebay is about worthless to me too..... I just need this thing to last till im financially stable enough to put a bigger turbo on it. Would a t3/t4 be too much for this thing without a ton of other mods? I already have a Holset HX30W but was told that it would be better to go with a T3. Im reading up on the Holset so im better informed of its capabilities.

Sell the Holset HX30W, use the money to buy one of the turbos above, or start a wanted ad in our wanted section, many people have extras laying around. I've got 8 or 9 turbos but none of them are stock (small). Technically, there is nothing wrong with using the HX30 if you have the ability to fab the few pieces needed to hook it to the exhaust and such. It performs similar to a T3.

I've been running a t3/t4 hybrid for quite a while now on a mostly stock engine with no problems and I believe it performs better than when I was running the ihi.

There are vast number of different hybrids so any blanket statements are hard to make. An IHI is undersized in stock form so I'm sure the hybrid pulls harder up top. I'd be willing to bet the track times aren't much different though.

Well, ive decided im gonna drive the car for a while, i mean, i MIGHT be putting 50 miles on it a week as i dont go anywhere. And im probably going to put the HX30W on it unless i find another one along the way better suited for me, i dont have much exhaust right now, about 4 feet of pipe then a glasspack so it wont be hard to fab a new downpipe and get it in there. I mean, thats incentive to have it totally made out of 3" right? Im not looking to take this car to the strip, i just want some decent power and to be able to win a few races (like with pontiacs and such). So, thanks guys and ill make sure to bring all my issues to this forum.
