i am new to the turbo 2.3.i have a 88 mustang notch 4 cylinder automatic.i have a wide selection of the 2.3 turbo engines 84 86 87 88 ( I live for the junkyard).witch one is the best year? the 84 has a roller cam is this stock?witch head flows the best numbers stock?i have talked with a few 2.3 guys and read forums before i jumped in head first.my goal is about 400 horsepower.the first engine i am going to install in the car will have (already have but not installed)arp 2000 rod bolts, arp head studs, arp main studs and a felpro 1035 head gasket.the components i already have are a T4 67mm p trim turbo,850cc injectors, very large air to air intercooler, haltech E6X engine management, upr chromoly K member, bump steer, camber plates,8.8 3.55 rear end,4 cylinder (4.00 first gear)T5 transmissions, etc.i have been looking for a turbo header with a t4 flange and have not been able to find one.my "pipe" dream is to run a 10.90 at the track and then drive it home. any other information or experience would be appreciated.

The engines are all the same, there are just a few auxiliary items (turbo, injectors, air meter, intake, exhaust manifold) that vary. Since you are replacing all of these items, it means it doesn't matter which engine you snag. The heads are the same as well except some late 88 heads got upgraded valve seats. They all flow the same. No turbo 2.3 cam stock with a roller cam. I'd snag the 84 (for the roller cam components) and another one or two for spares...this is assuming they are all fairly cheap.

thank you for the reply stinger.i already have all these engines.i have paid under $100 for the two long blocks and about $200 for the other complete engines.these are getting harder to find.do you make a turbo header with a t4 flange?if not i will make an adaptor that will have an external waste gate flange.stinger do you think these horsepower numbers are real with the components i have described?our is alot of cylinder head work needed for big numbers?this combo will have 3 inch intercooler piping,a large intercooler,80mm throttle body and 3 inch exhaust all the way out.so flow every were else will not be a problem.

No T4 flange header, some companies make flanges that adapt t3 to t4 without any problems. 400hp is possible with the components you describe, it won't be easy though. A professionally ported head by someone who specializes in 2.3's (boport) and one of his cams would make it much easier to get there (and have room to spare when you see that 400hp won't get you in the 10's).

Is there any difference between an 88 Turbo coupe engine an an 85 SVO engine, because i have an 85 SVO but since the previous owner yanked it out for a carbed 302, all i have is a 2.3L out of a turbo coupe that a friend is willing to sell me.
