Creating a thread for my PiMPxs "pre-purchase" questions so that I can gain some knowledge on options/capabilities, plan next steps and other related modifications that the PiMPxs will ultimately be a catalyst for...
Some basic background on the application:
1986 Mustang GT 5.0, 5spd Long-Block: Low-mileage 302W with "ported" E7 heads (flow about 20 cfm more than stock - intake and exhaust ported/matched, bowls blended, thermactor bumps removed, 3-angle vale job, etc.) Yes, nothing to write home about... Cam: Stock with FRPP 1.6 RR's Intake: Edelbrock Performer RPM (box stock matched to intake port on heads) Power Adder: Vortech V2 SQ-Trim (approx. 8 psi) no FMU Fuel: 42lb FRPP injectors (real green tops - recently flowed/cleaned), Walbro GSS340 255lph Exhaust: MAC 1-5/8" long-tube headers, 2.5" h-pipe/exhaust Have TFS 170 heads and a custom cam waiting to be installed, but want to get the PiMPxs up and running before I do the install. |

Questions:
(1) Does the PiMPxs utilize the factory narrowband O2's? If so, can they be removed and replaced with the (2) Spartan 2 WBO2's which can feed both the narrowband and WBO2 signals?
(2) Is it best to run 2 WB02's vs. just one?
(3) To wire the Spartan 2's can the factory O2 wiring be utilized (cut the connector off) and use the power, ground, (add in extra wiring as needed) etc. to install the Spartan's or do they need to be wired separately to different pins?
(4) Would like to run a DIS type ignition, what are the best "types" to consider? I know that a CAS distributor conversion setup is being finalized by Stinger which should be plug and play, however, how does this compare to a Ford EDIS-8 or other COP setups?
(5) Can the PiMPxs easily run a Ford EDIS-8? Is anything else needed besides a 36-1 trigger wheel, trigger pickup/sensor, cam position sensor, and wiring?
(6) With a CAS distributor conversion setup or EDIS-8, is a CD type ignition box (Crane HI-6, MSD 6AL, etc.) still needed to increase spark?
(7) Have Ford Contour electric cooling fans (dual fans), can the PiMPxs run them? I'm currently using a DCC controller to run them... is it still needed? www.dccontrol.com/constant_temperature_controllers.htm
(8) I'm also planning to purchase the Perfect Tuning gauge along with 2 Solid Air/Fuel Ratio Digital Gauges for dedicated monitoring of both WB02s. Can WB02 signal be fed to both Solid Air/Fuel Ratio Digital gauges and the Perfect Tuning gauge without issue?
(9) Have an AutoMeter #7763 Fuel Pressure gauge which has a .5 - 4.5v analog output, will this signal work for the PiMPxs for datalogging?

1) It uses a single wideband, or dual widebands.
2) On a high output twin turbo setup it is certainly advantageous. On a mild n/a setup we typically say to just use one. If you suspect one bank is leaner than the other, you can try the wideband in each side and then leave it in the leaner side for tuning. This way you know the other bank is richer than the wideband shows.
3) Yes, that's how we say to wire them.
4) The CAS and the harness we're working on doesn't dictate what coils you run so you can run as nice of a coil as you'd like. You can also run Ford EDIS if you'd rather. There is no real limitation to how you do your ignition. It's just a matter of wiring and configuring it.
5) Yes, it just needs the stock ignition components.
6) This depends on how much spark energy your engine needs and what coils you run but the general answer is no, you don't need a box anymore.
7) Only one fan is supported via the V8 harness but there are additional outputs that can be used to control a second fan.
8) Perfect gauge can display both wideband signals. If you want dedicated wideband gauges and want to display other stuff on the perfect gauge, you can see the signal between them.
9) It can be used with a custom data channel if you know the voltage vs pressure info for the sender.

Do the "Solid Air/Fuel Ratio Digital Gauges" get their signal directly from the Spartan 2 controller or from the PiMPxs?

Solid gauge is wired to Spartan. Perfect gauge uses CAN protocol from ECU to get wideband signal.

Yes, it will work with all crank triggers. There are cheaper/easier options depending what you're trying to accomplish with the crank trigger.

I'm considering running a Distributorless Ignition like the Ford EDIS-8. Is a COP ignition a better option with the GM LS coils? I'm not sure yet if I want to go the COP route yet, but I could be convinced...  To run EDIS-8, a 36-1 trigger wheel, trigger pickup/sensor, cam position sensor, and the EDIS-8 coils, module and harness are needed, correct? Is there another way to run EDIS-8 with the PiMPxs? Do you have a recommendation for a crank trigger setup other than the Holley "kit?" What is required to run COP with the GM LS coils with the PiMPxs? |

In a "from scratch" application, the EDIS honestly makes little sense. It is hard to buy quality modules, and to maintain sequential you would still need some sort of cam sync.
What is your honest timeline for wanting to run COP? Is your plan to use your OEM harness?
We are in the process of developing products that more or less make LS style coils a close to "plug and play" kit.

Well, I live in CT and the car is parked for the winter until all the salt is permanently off the roads, so realistically I'm looking to get the new ECU/Ignition setup by April/May timeframe. I'll probably purchase the PiMPxs in the coming weeks and then start to piece the remaining components that I need together as I determine what direction I want to go with the ignition portion of the setup.
I may actually want to run / try to run MAF to compare to the SD/MAP side of the PiMPxs's capabilities to determine which I like better... I'm assuming that I could just install my MAF Harness into the correct pin locations to run MAF, correct?
Regarding the harness, that is one aspect that I've given more and more thought to as I research and contemplate how I want to go about the change. I'd like to preserve my factory harness and possibly install a fresh harness (like the one you offer) that doesn't have the connections that are no longer utilized such as EGR, etc. with the PiMPxs so I can clean things up a bit.
Do you have another harness that you are developing that integrates the COP/CNP connections along with any other connections that are required to run the LS style coils? If you are developing an additional harness, would be great if it was also plug and play with the Spartan 2's that you offer!
Will your plug and play LS style coil kit utilize a cam sensor and will it utilize a crank trigger? |

It will be an expansion harness that connects to the expansion port of the ECU. It will work with stock or aftermarket harnesses.
It would be intended to be used with our CAS so you wouldn't need a crank trigger.
The wideband doesn't connect to the expansion harness.

Are you developing different types of CAS's as options or just one type? I believe I read in another thread that your CAS is a TFI distributor "conversion," or will it be like the Explorer CAS? I'd like to "clean-up" the front of the engine as much as possible so a small Explorer type CAS would be ideal. Looking forward to learning more and seeing what is in development... Not needing a crank trigger is certainly a bonus... keeps things simple! |

We're doing a single type which bolts in place of the stock distributor cap. It's a billet aluminum cap. Obviously the plugs no longer come off the distributor so that cleans up the front of the engine by default. The "goodies" that allow all of this to work without a crank trigger are under the cap.
If you want to run an Explorer CAS and crank trigger setup then you can, it's just not the way we're setting up our plug and play setup to work as most of our customers want the easiest and most affordable option. There are plenty of crank trigger options out there already if you want to go that route.

The CAS will most likely be ready before the harness as it's been in pre-production for a couple years and a number of people are running them with plastic caps. So it's just a matter of getting them machined out of aluminum. The harness is probably 4-6 weeks out.
