This is just the chip that you upload the tune to. Programming software can be downloaded for free on Moates’ website (www.moates.net).
To read or Burn the tune to the chip, you’ll need Moates’ Jaybird module.

Sorry for being a knob (hence the newbie tag) the J3 chip is the IC or is it also the adaptor card to the engineering port on the ECU? I did go to the Motes site where I couldn't find the J3 chip to see what it looks like or maybe its there and I missed it. The jaybird interfaces to the adaptor card and uses the same edge blade connector as on the engineering port of the ECU. I am guessing there is no emulation or data logging with this set up. The stuff I am used to is DDEC so this is a bit of a new path for me.

It's a chip that can "slide" on to the ECU circuit board via the J3 port. On Moates' site the J3 memory chip should be under hardware for ford 1986 to 2004. Here is a pic of mine. photos.app.goo.gl/joD9F7ewtFHguQgWAphotos.app.goo.gl/6vYvCTsuUrkeeiFm6Yes, the jaybird is the same in size and the chip slides onto it. Then through a mini USB cable you can read or program the chip with the jaybird using a computer. Yes, no emulation or data logging. For that you would need to go with Moates' Quarter horse.

Perfectly clear now. The chip is to program after doing the emulation or data log and created a stable tune (calibration file). It is locked out and if changes are made then a new emulation / data log and calfile burn to chip. I would need to invest in the QHorse then use the chip once I have a good cal. 3 cars = 3 chips and 1 QHorse. I am more of the tuner I have a lot of experience with DDEC making the leap shouldn't be that steep of a learning curve but I need the right tools and this doesn't fit that bill. Thanks for the explanation.
