Hello, looking for some advice on a new turbo for my build. 84 turbo GT vert with a Boport stage 3 head, boport 1.5 cam, FMIC, center header, 65mm TB, rotated and gutted upper and lower intake, PIMPxs to be run in batch mode initially, 835CC injectors from stinger, 3" downpipe with five bolt flange to dual 2.5" exhaust also from stinger. Looking to be in the range of 400HP if possible at 18PSI. Any other suggestions or tweaks that i should be looking at, please feel free to chime in.
Thanks Jim

You're going to need a good sized turbo to crack 400 at that boost level.

Is premium fuel 93 or 91 octane there?
Why only 18psi?

It's a goal to start with. Lol. I got nothing against turning up the boost. What do you think is realistic. I'm thinking of going with boport t3/t4 50 trim with the stage 3 wheel. Probably the .63 a/r?? Wasn't sure what opinions were out there seeing the variety of turbo options to choose from.

What's realistic depends on octane available locally, you didn't answer that question so I can't say what's realistic.
By the cam choice I assume this is a "driver" not a race car so you prioritize quick spool and torque over peak hp?

Premium is 93. Justed figured I'd start boosting it low until I get the pimp figured out. I've ran it plenty at 24psi. Blew a head gasket at 28psi before mods. Lol. Sorry. Just seen your post

You'll likely need to settle into the low 20's for boost once it's all dialed in. This depends on a number of variables (turbo & intercooler efficiency, ambient temp, timing, AFR, etc.) so there is no way to say exactly what the safe limit is.

Yes. Initial build was to use the car on the street more than we probably will, but I'm ok with that. Kinda wish I went a little bigger on the cam now, but it's a complete restoration, so I'm sure it'll be just fine where ever it settles in.

The 50 trim you mentioned above isn't a bad option and it's as close to a bolt on upgrade over a stock turbo you can get (if you get it with an internally wastegated 5 bolt outlet exhaust housing) so that certainly has its benefits. I've ran them on a couple cars and they are a good upgrade for a street car that's making more power than the stock turbo can support.
There are certainly more modern turbos that will outperform it in every way (like the Borg Warner EFR's) but they are also twice the price and more work to install because they aren't available with the 5 bolt outlet, have a different inlet flange, different oil line threads, etc.

Somehow i must have deleted my post yesterday instead of replying. Thanks for the advice shannon. For now it looks like i'll be going with the 50 trim. I've got nothing against changing the 5 bolt flange to something different, but id like to stay in the 800-1000 range for now.

A quality 50 trim is in that $775-$800 range.
