I’ve been chasing an engine miss for months now and need help. I have a MS2 w V3.0 board set up for TFI ignition. Turbo Ford 2.3, Been driving it for years. Coming home a couple months ago it started to miss. Replaced most everything and still had the same miss on cylinder 3. Pulled the spout and the miss goes away. So I start to look at my MS. Looked at the PIP signal at pin 24 and it’s a nice squarewave. Looks good. The output signal on pin 36 looks like crap. The pulses are all different widths with one very narrow pulse which I’d guess is getting filtered out as noise, maybe. So I pulled the MS and put it on my STIM and the PIP (pin 24) and the SPOUT (pin36) are in sync and all pulses are the same width. So now I suspected my wiring. First I made sure the MS gave the same signal with SPOUT timing plug removed. It did so I had a new set of MS wires here waiting on another project so I swapped in the new 37 pin connector and wires. So all the grounds for the MS are fresh. No change. I had replaced the pickup in the distributor, the Motorcraft TFI w a new Motorcraft TFI, checked the shutter for being magnetized when I replaced the pickup (didn’t notice any). What else would cause that output signal to be screwed up?

Can you post a tooth log showing the bad signal you were seeing?

This isn’t intermittent. I’ve been staring at the same signals for a month while I was trying different things I thought would help. You asked for a tooth log, is there directions on how to do that some where? Or is it part of logging everything?

It's part of the high speed logging dialog in TunerStudio. Shows the signal from the distributor.

You should have 1 long tooth and 3 significantly shorter teeth in a repeating pattern. Yours is not like this at all, you've got a long one and then a stair step pattern.

That is the shutter pattern in my distributor? That’s something I haven’t checked but I’m not sure what could have changed to cause this change in the tach pulse. Pulling the distributor and replacing the PIP was the first thing I did. Birthday party for my daughter tomorrow night so I won’t be able to inspect it until Thursday.

Yes, that's the pip/shutter wheel pattern.
I agree that it's not something that should change.

Well I measured all my shutters and they were all the same and openings were all the same. So I spun one of my distributor shafts with a drill. Tooth log was flat across the top. Pulled the distributor and distributor drive gear is worn on one side and not the other. So the shutter was speeding up and slowing down just like the first tooth log showed. I put my best used gear on and put it back in and the tooth log isn’t perfect but much closer to flat and the miss seems to be gone. I don’t have a totally back together yet. I’ll be buying a new gear tomorrow.

The gear and aux shaft have to be a matching set (new and new or used from the same engine), otherwise your new gear will wear out like the old gear very quickly. It's no different than running a mismatched pinion and ring gear in a rear end.
