Hello. I've been running a Fox Mustang with a 1987 2.3L Turbocoupe engine with the Warner-Ishi IHI turbo at 16 psi, no mods beyond an intercooler. I bought the car with the engine swap a number of years ago, and its given me few issues.
More recently, I've started blowing blueish/oil smoke in my exhaust, and upon removing my turbo have a good amount of shaft play. I'd like to rebuild the turbo and get my car back on the road.
It appears that there is little to no support for rebuilding the 1987 IHI turbo. Does anyone have any suggestions for a stock rebuild/replacement?
I would prefer to keep mods/fab at a minimum, direct swap would be my preference at this time.
Thanks

Thank you very much Stinger, I greatly appreciate your helpful suggestion.
Do you happen to have any experience with that particular seller or that exact kit? Or have there been any success stories from anyone else? I'm ready to buy it, just trying to hedge my bets that it is a good rebuild kit, not poor quality or the wrong components for a Warner-Ishi Turbocoupe unit (I see now there are a few variants of the RHB5 turbo used in other non-Ford applications in the 80s/90s, not sure if the internals are identical between units).
I see a number of rebuild kits on Ebay now when searching for RHB5 turbo, and not sure if any kit is of better quality, accuracy, or completeness.
Thanks

I have no experience with the kit. There aren't a ton of companies making rebuild kits for old turbos though so I suspect they are all about the same unless one is way cheaper (Chinese knock-off).
Some of the RHB5 variants have different housings and compressor wheels but they are internally the same as far as the parts in the rebuild kit are concerned. Yours likely only needs new bearings (bushings), seals, and thrust bearing.
