Hey everyone, just picked up this 88 tc about a month ago and have been hard at work trying to get it up to speed. i've pretty much done most of the basic mods at this point including a full tune up of plugs (motorcraft gapped at .31), oem wires, cleaned vam , cleaned iac, clutch, rear main, valve cover gasket, pcv delete, 255 pump and a kirban. started driving it the past few days and she starts up fine and idles smooth around 1000-1100 and seems fine once its warm most of the time.., occasionally on decel it flutters and sound like it may die but it recovers. As soon as i turn the car off and go to restart it with any time in between (any time basically when its warmed up) the thing wont idle and i have to hold the rpms at 1200 to keep it running. the weird part is that it will randomly start to idle at some point if i keep it running and it varies in how long it lasts, sometimes its a few mins others it could be 10-15 min. i was thinking it might be my iac or the connector but not really sure. i did pull the plug on the iac when it was running and it died so i don't really have any idea whats causing this at the moment.

IAC's rarely go bad but they can certainly get dirty/carboned up and cause intermittent issues.

I did take it off and spray it out with carb cleaner, I guess I’ll do that again to see if that helps

Grab the little plunger inside and move it back and forth while you're cleaning it to help knock loose any debris

Ok I will do that, planning to do that tomorrow... another question, I drove it this morning to work and the idle was progressively worse it only idled till warm then was fluctuating from 500- 1500 then all of a sudden it was stuck at 2k and I couldn’t get it down, not sure if the iac could cause something like that also?

The IAC controls idle speed so it can cause any idle speed related issues. There are other things that can be involved but the IAC is the primary idle speed dictator.

update I got a replacement iac and the problem was half solved but still persisted, just less. I also went over and redid my base isle and that seemed to help even more and it is not dying now but from time to time the idle will flutter after an acceleration. I also cleaned my injectors and that helped I think as well.

also had another issue regarding coming into boost, it seems random but mostly does it on a 2nd and 3rd gear pull, it will spool up then just completely fall on its face. then if you let out and ease into it more it sometimes will pick up and not fall on its face. it's just so random and has me pretty confused. the car is always in premium mode also with 93 in the tank.

It's 35+ year old antiquated electronics on a 45+ year old 4 cyl engine, idle will never be perfect under all conditions.
Falling on it's face could be a lot of things. It's misfiring but I can't definitively say if it's because of the fuel system or ignition system.

Well i've been driving it more recently and i think the computer just needed to relearn a bit because it has not fallen on its face the last two times i had it out, i think i just needed to be more patient and let it relearn. thank you for all the help
