any suggestions on a eec code reader? Been thinkin about getting a Innova 3140.

for code reading you can pick up a snap-on scanner on ebay for real cheap and it does alot more then just read codes. its the snap-on Mt-2500 its very good its what I use till well now mine is updated till 2003 but you don't need that to scann a 1988.
you can even set timing with it and look for wirering problem.

I think that's a bit overkill, a $20 EEC-IV code reader from any parts store is more than sufficient. Technically you can do it with a paper clip if your check engine light works.

well finaly got my code reader and the codes I got are 81 82 83 84 seem like all egr codes. Will this cause the low speed miss.

Do a system pressure test to 20psi.

OK so I ran the koer and got codes 25 34 37 43 47 54 4 is this pointing at a bad vam? did the pressure test at 20 psi couldnt hear any leaks. thanks again stinger. And those blinky light obd readers kinda stink. To easy to lose track of the flashes and beeps.

You sure you counted the beeps/flashes right? Half of those aren't even valid 2.3 codes.
On new turbo swaps, vam codes typically mean wiring issues, not actually a faulty vam.
