I installed a ported head on my well worn stock 88TC short block. I have a few miles on it now and it is starting to make some ticking noises. It of course is most noticable when the engine is cold. Oil pressure as measured with a mechanical gauge is 60lbs cold at idle and 40lbs warm at idle. I pulled the valve cover after warming up the engine and all of the rockers could be wiggled when the valve was closed. I just wonder if some trash could have made its way into one of the oil supply passage some where? It did not start this till after the truck set for a few weeks waiting on my MS to come back. Any ideas before I tear this thing down. It loud enough that I can hear it over my dumped exhaust inside the cab.

Slider or roller cam?
I'd use a piece of hose or a screw driver to the ear to try to more closely locate the source of the noise.

Its a Bo 2.5. Its definately comming from the head in the valve train area. Its just that tipical lifter noise. just gets higher pictched with RPM. The screw driver was one of the first thing I did. Then pulled the valve cover and took a look. Nothing broken or out of place. No odd wear that could be seen by the eye. I am going to put a few miles on it tomorrow and see if it just clears up.

I assume you got shims for the HLA's with the cam? If it doesn't clear up soon I'd see what Bo has to say.

Bo assembled the head but its not the problem it is an oil issue. The ticking cleared up after a 30 minute drive but when I started it today it took longer than normal to build oil pressure. It acted like the oil pump had lost prime while setting. Once the oil pressure builds its good.

I must be a glutton for punishment. Every time I fix one thing something else starts acting up. I got the MS back a couple of weeks ago the next day a brake caliper locked up. Fixed that and now this. Guess it would not be any fun without having to work on it constantly.

Oh yeah I forgot to let you know what ended up being my problem at the track. My WGA had unthreaded some so the waste gate was open over a half of an inch. No wonder it was so slow to build boost. It must be spinning in the diaphragm. That is the only way it could unthread.

That will do it! Put a nut on it so it's double nutted and that won't happen again.

I had it double nutted. So now it has high heat loctite and double nuts.

Hmm...not sure how it's possible for that to unthread.
