my donor motor is from an 86 merkur (according to the seller). with a little research (rockauto.com) it ask if it was made 7-15-86 or after 7-16-86. does it really matter which one i choose? from the pics it looks like a difference in a 2 piece main seal and pan gasket. would'nt going with the later of the two give me a one pice main seal and gasket or am i missing something. i thought internally bearing, ring, a misc. would be the same no mater what as long as it was for a ford 2.3 turbo? either way i gotta order it. i just want the right one. id prefer 1 piece main seal and pan. correct me if im wrong ol wise one's

im sure taking it apart (tomorrow) will verify. but if it is the earlier of the two motors i should be able to use the later with the benefits of the one piece gasket/seals? id rather be safe than sorry.

The difference between the two is more than just a pan gasket. Both the front seal retainer and the rear main cap are grooved for the four piece gasket set. On the one piece engines the rear main cap and front seal retainer are not grooved.

well thanks to the rain i didn't get anything taken apart to verify the motor. thanks for the info merc460. does that mean the parts would not be interchangeable if i was to say use the rear main cap off the 2.3 NA motor in the car i have as well as its front seal retainer? one piece mainseals just make it easier to replace when it starts to leak and seal better in the first place thats why they went to them on the later model correct?

Not interchangeable. Just use the proper kit for what you have.

after freezing my butt off i got most of the motor torn down. after removing the oil pan i see the groves in front retainer and rear main. so to be absolutly positive before i order the re-ring kit. the groves would mean its an early 86 2.3 t correct? the casting number on the block reads rf-e3ze-6015. doesn't e=1980 3= year digit of the decade. 1983 in my case? Z= ? and e=engine

this is the casting number on my block. that makes it an 83 correct? if it is an 83 then it can't be from a merkur (correct?) the oil pan looks like stamped steel in stead of aluminum and has a rubber grommet not to far from the drain plug which is on the drivers side of the engine
