Pondering options of a newly acquired '93 Ranger Splash w/2.3 Lima. A couple questions: - Since this has a MAF instead of a VAM, does it have capacity to measure air intake mass beyond the limitations of the VAM (which is maxed out by the door swing) - If that's the case, other than boost timing retard - what would be the need of ECM mods for a turbo swap since the MAF input is used to calculate fuel requirements? Would the engine/turbo just be plug-n-play for the most part, with possibly an aftermarket timing retard and boost controller?

The stock MAF can't measure airflow for more than about 150hp. Injectors can't even support that. The stock ECU doesn't have any timing or fueling for positive MAP pressure if boost is present it's problematic, even if you've got a boost retard box on it (which doesn't help fueling).
So you either throw a PiMPx in it with some bigger injectors and move on (no wiring mods), do the "turbo swap" wiring to allow use of an LA3/VAM/35's, or you go down the rabbit hole of seeing if there is a bin file available for your ECU to use in combination with a Quarterhorse, Binary Editor, wideband, injectors, larger MAF, etc.
