I have gotten back to work on this '86 Mustang. It was a carbed 4 cyl. I pulled the tank today hoping to change the pump to the one I pulled from the TC and as suspected it's totally different. My question is will a tank from a fuel injected 4 cyl work? Or do I need to find an 8 cyl fuelie tank? Also, my son has a '99 Lightning and has put bigger pumps in his tank, does anyone know if one of his pumps is bigger than the stock TC pump? And would it hurt the stock injectors until I upgrade to 55lbr's? Sorry for the long post and any mispelling..4:30 am was a long time ago now. Thanks for any info.

You can use any 87-93 EFI mustang fuel tank. I would assume the stock lightning pump is quite large but you'd have to google to verify. The injectors don't care what pump you run.

Just remember to swap our fuel level sender to the 87-93 tank, early mustangs use a different ohm scale than 87 and up mustangs. I found this out the hardway.

I have located a tank with sender from a v6 car to use. with the harness.

Does anyone know if the v6 harness will splice right into the old 4cyl harness. it's the one that goes through the trunk floor, and work the fuel gauge?

I would assume all of the chassis wiring is the same.

I cheated when I did mine. Instead of replacing the entire harness for the sender and fuel pump, I just added the wiring for the electric fuel pump. I left the fuel gauge sender harness alone, and it plugged right into the sender on the 86 GT tank. I stripped the fuel pump plug and about 3ft of wiring from the old TC tank harness. Then I poked a hole in the Mustang's molded rubber plug where the sender wires went through the floor, and fished the fuel pump wiring through the hole. It's insulated by the plug so it won't rub against anything, and the sender wiring is still untouched.
