My built short block is from an earlier block that utilizes a 4 piece oil pan gasket. Thoughts on using just the two main groove rubber seals and RTV-ing the rest? Seems the cork side pieces are hit or miss.
I also saw a comment on this forum about filling in the cap grooves with JB weld and then using a one piece gasket.. anyone done this?

It's fine as long as you don't overdo it and end up with "nubs" of RTV squished inside the pan that can fall off later and plug the pickup screen. Cork is fine, the trick is to glue it in place, then bolt it together after it's tacked up.
Yes, some people have filled the grooves.

By glue it in place, do you mean like a light coating of RTV on it to keep it in place? I’m thinking of how I’ve always done the water pump gasket. Each side would get a very light smear of RTV to keep it in place and help seal. Never had any problems with that

RTV is too slick and dries too slow. I'm not sure what people normally use. I use something called bellows adhesive that I came across decades ago working in my family's boat repair business. It's a stringy yellow material that you brush on thin and then set the gasket in place, and once it is tacky (but not dry), you assemble it. Wear gloves as it doesn't wash off your hands. Looks like it's about $10 for a tube online. If you ever remove the pan, the gasket should stay attached to whatever side you glued it to.

Sounds good; thank you for the advice. I also have studs for the oil pan so I think between that, a bit of adhesive, and a small amount of RTV in the corners, I should be set.
