Got a '79 Pinto that i'm wanting to put a 2.3 turbo in. Original plan was to use a '88 TC engine but the guy has lost the ECU and has no wiring to go with it. Local junk yard has a '86 Merkur XR4ti complete. Would this be a good setup to "get my feet wet" in the turbo world? Appreciate any input.

Any efi 2.3t engine is basically the same (minus a few bolt on changes like injector size or the turbo size) or the ecu and air meter. Everything can be swapped between years though so "any" 2.3 turbo efi engine will work.

ok thanks one more question...for now. I got my hands on a LA3 ECU will it work with the '86 Merkur engine without modifications? The Merkur has the small VAM and no intercooler. Just wondering if i would have to do anything to make them work together. I can probably get a IC and a large VAM if needed.

Any ecu needs the matching sized VAM and injectors to work properly. The LA3 uses the big vam and brown top injectors so make sure you have those before you use it. You'll also need to repin the harness for the LA3 (it's only a handful of wires to move around). An intercooler would be needed for more than 12psi or so with the LA3.
