Hello! I am new to your site but not new to turbo 2.3... Went away for a while but drawn back with a new project...1987 Turbo Coupe, automatic. Plans are to convert to 5 speed, and 5 lug which are currently in the works with bigger brakes to do auto cross. Question is I am now in love with this site and the parts, so keeping the autocross in mind smaller turbo quicker spool time what header, down pipe, waste gate, software is my best option. Keep in mind I have a TC 5 speed with a 3.73 gear from a auto?

Stinger sells a tubular header, 3" Downpipe and a standalone ECU(the PiMP) all on this very website (http://stinger-performance.com/). With those three items the stock Garrett T3 will spool rather quickly. There are also other cheap header options on EBay, but their quality and workmanship have often been sub-par I've heard.
Do you have any class regulations for what you can/can't modify from stock?
The rear end will be fine for auto or manual, doesn't matter.
Depending one the size of the track and if its a daily driver the 3.73's should be a good all around gear. If you are going to run shorter lap circuits than 4:11's might be better suited for quicker lap times.
You will have to get a drive shaft from a manual trans car if I'm not mistaken though.

I actually wouldn't suggest a header in this application as the stock E6 manifold will spool quicker and not really hurt power much in this scenario.

Great info, so if I stick with a garrett t3, an external waste gated down pipe, some port work to the intake and exhaust manifolds, ranger roller for friction reduction and the pimp ecu I should be all set : )

Do you actually have a Garrett T3? The 87 TC came with an IHI turbo.
No need for an external wastegate, you'll gain nothing from it with the stock turbo/manifold.
Porting the intake/exhaust will certainly help. You may be best off to not gut the upper as the longer runners will make more TQ and match the RR cam better.

As I said before I'm new to the forum but not to turbo 2.3. I have a 1988 Ranger 4x4 with a 2.3 turbo that was donated to me by a friend after he has burned a hole in number 3 piston. It has billet aux shaft and a garrett turbo. We used to take it to local mud bogs.
My TC currently has the IHI. My future HP goals are for 300-350 range so I don't want to put on parts that will later hold me back. I just want a solid part combo that will make a nice weekend warrior/ autocross. It would be nice to pull as much as possible out of the smaller Garrett. What exhaust down pipe/waste gate should I use then??

Out of the two turbos you have mentioned, the Garrett is not the smaller turbo and the IHI will be hard pressed to make your HP goal. Unless your saying that you want to go bigger than the "smaller" Garrett at some point. The 3 inch downpipe with a stock, but ported, E6 manifold will be sufficient for 300+.
