I have an 87 TC. I had an extra head lying around so I decided I would try my hand at porting it. I did so very mildly, mostly just cleaned it up. The swap went smoothly and the engine runs well, except whenever I rev above 4000 it stalls out. I checked the timing again and its dead on. Any ideas?
p.s. I'm not sure if this matters, but its slightly difficult to start it again after it stalls.

Did you swap the cam/lifters from the original head or use what was already in the ported head?

The lifters are new, the old ones were seized. But the cam, followers, valves and springs are all the same ones that were in the head I ported. I was careful to keep them in the original order and such.

So it actually quits running when you go over 4k? Does it do it in neutral as well?
Have you scanned for codes?

yes, it quits running after i let off the gas after having gone above 4k (roughly). If i stay on the gas it keeps running, though i haven't really pushed the limits of that to see how long i could keep it running. it revs down at normal pace but just when it should level off at idle the tach just keeps falling til it stalls. yes it does do it in neutral as well. and i haven't ran the code scanner yet, i plan to tomorrow, but theres no check engine light.

Valve springs are weak and letting the HLA's pump up...holds the valves open for 30 seconds or so which means it won't idle or start easily until the excess oil bleeds out of the HLA's.

Definite possibility, I didn't check the installed height before installing the head. I'll check tomorrow. Thanks for your input!

The installed height will be fine...the problem only exists as revs increase (over 4k).
