I've been working on getting my 86 SVO to really move for about a year now. In an attempt to do this I have made the following upgrades:
Gutted upper/ported lower
Hx35w
FMIC
Stinger header
Stinger dp
80lb high impedence
Pimp (thanks Shannon and Wes for the help on the other thread)
Stock head and cam, but I have a home ported head I'll put on it at some point
5.0 bell adapter
Aluminum flywheel
Centerforce dual friction clutch (orange pp)
Adjustable fpr (Kirban)
Cam gear
Msd box (Just a spark blowout deterrent).
Anyway, I've read many places that the holset that I am running will result in a massive loss of bottom end to the point where it will be no fun to drive on the street unless I'm in 3rd. I had it out the other day (letting VE live do its thing) and I started to do some low boost (12-14psi) pulls. I never really experienced this crazy lag that everyone mentions. Why? Is it due to the stock cam/head? I know that a good port job should really make power over stock in all parts of the powerband (if you are conservative enough). If the stock-like torque is due to the stock cam then I was thinking about leaving the cam stock and putting the ported head on it. I will mention that I had a nearly stock set up before and then pulled the motor and bolted the above mods on, minus the dp (it was on there before). I wasn't looking at the tach as much as I was the afr, but it seemed I had about 12psi at 2500 rpm. I could still lug the thing around in 5th gear, it basically drove like it did before, but with more power. I haven't had a chance to mess with the spark tables in TS other than just making it really conservative for the time being as to make sure I had the afrs right so I know there is more power to be had at higher boost and more advance.
Basically, I need some advice on where to go next. This car is a dd. Will going to a 2277 or similar cam cause this bottom end that I have to go away? Should I get the ported head on there (it's a big valve head btw) and leave the cam alone for now? My goal is to be able to make around 350rwhp or run 12s in the quarter. If I can do this with stock cam, I will.
Thanks,
Justin
