sorry about all the questions lately... Ive got an 87 2.3 turbo coup motor in a 79 mustang the question I'm asing is can you check cam timing with a timing light whit the motor running just like you would check distributor timing?

The correct way is to test it without the engine running. Just turn the engine to TDC and make sure it lines up with the cam timing marker (or points perfectly at the auxiliary shaft centerline).

ok well i check the timing with the motor off and it look good but just for nutss and gigles i hit it with the timing light and it read off a tooth and a half

It shouldn't run 1.5 teeth off (or at least would barely run). I'd say it's fine if it runs good.
