I've been around the 2.3 turbo engines for several years now but have never had to rebuild an engine. I'm doing a turbo swap on an 87 mustang coupe with an 88 turbo coupe engine. I have disassembled the engine and cleaned everything thoroughly. So far i haven't found any flaws to speak of, the head doesn't have any cracks (that I can see. Will def have it magnafluxed soon and pressure tested), and the cylinder walls are very smooth.
Is there anything else I should look for before reassembling? Is it worth taking the pistons out and installing new rings? If replacing piston rings and rod bearings should i replace rod bolts too? Also, provided that the head checks out, I plan on having big valves put in as well as hardened exhaust valve seats. I already have an a237 roller cam with followers, lifters, and springs. I plan on buying the big valves on ebay soon.Should I trust NAPA to do the head work?
Ive read Stinger's write-up on the swap and everything seems pretty straight forward. I need this car to be reliable as i will be driving it about 50 miles a day five days a week, but i also want to take it to the strip a year or so after the swap once I have the engine built the way I want it. future mods are header, external wastegate, holset turbo, ported intake, wideband o2, mass air... etc. basically I want to keep everything that can be replaced while the engine is still in the car stock, so I can replace it later when I have the money. I'm hoping to make 350 to 400 hp when its all said and done. I'm mostly concerned about making a short-block last another 100k+ miles and also be able to support up to 400hp in the near future. I don't know how many miles were on the engine when it was pulled. Any tips or advice is appreciated.
Thanks,
Korey
