I took the turbo off the car a week ago and decided to remove the housings because I saw there was a bolt snapped off on the inside of the hot side for one of the hold down tabs. I have all of the bolts removed or broken off at this point except the one that backs into the oil feed flange. This is backed out enough to let the hold down tab swing free but the housing still won't come off. I tried a dead blow hammer on the exhaust turbine to try to knock it loose and that didn't move anything. Then I tried a brass hammer and a vice and that didn't do anything either. I didn't want to swing too hard for fear of damaging too much... what am I missing here?

Sounds like it's siezed on the center section and you may need to heat it up or try your favorite penetrating oil.

Unfortunately you opened a whole can of worms by deciding to remove it to fix a broken bolt...unless the proper technique is used, all you end up with is more broken bolts and headaches.
Don't fear breaking the exhaust housing, you can beat the crap out of it. It is typically better to have it in a vise and try to rotate it then it is to try and hit it off towards the rear. As stated, heat is your friend...make it glow orange.

Make the exhaust housing red hot right? I was hitting on the actual turbine head trying to push it out of the exhaust housing itself.... Probably a bad idea! I just noticed the exhaust housing has a crack in it where the down elbow mounts on the side for the BOV... it's a fairly noticeable crack that runs "north/south" through the opening for the BOV or whatever that's called. How muxh of a problem is that? I am pretty sure it was there before I took the turbo off the car because I haven't hit it hard enough to really cause any damage.
I deffinently have my work cut out for me because ALL but 1 of the bolts on the exhaust side broke off... So I should coat it with some knock 'er loose and go buy a Big Fing Hammer?

I meant to ask earlier if there are any modifications I can do while the housings are off??? Anything fairly cheap and easy to do at home would be really nice.

Don't hit the turbine, smack the housing off the center section. They all will eventually crack through the waste gate hole, so depending how long it is it should be no big deal post a pic?

Only real modification that can be done to the housing is to port the opening to match whatever manifold/header you are running...

I'll get a pic of the crack later on.

You can make a spreader out of a bolt a nut and an oversized not so that when you loosen the correct size nut it pushes the head and over sized nut against the housing to push it apart. This is how I got mine apart. I tried heating it, beating it, and other stuff, only thing I got to work was the above method.

i like the idea of glowing it orange and getting the Big FORD Hammer out and going to town. but then again, I just like to play with fire and hit things with hammers.....however, sometimes brute force and ignorance does the job best! good luck.

I got it all apart and had some of the maintenance guys at work drill out the broken bolts and re tap them all! Worked out nicely now because I have new stainless steel fastners everywhere!
