Ok, I am touching on a subject that I already visited once before.
I am changing gears with my project. First I need to thank everyone for their input on my '92 Project. Here is what happened: I was following up on the input given by you guys and happened upon this other option: an '84 SVO 1C with extensive head, exhaust and intake porting. It currently has 28,000 miles on the a rebuilt engine and transmission, 4.10 gears, TC Inter-cooler, t3/t4 hybrid, and LA3 computer.
After figuring the time and money I would invest in my '92 project vs the money I would spend buying this car which is already running, I chose the car.
I went to go pick the car up, this past weekend and had the cash in hand with every intent to drive the car home. I test drove the car and I was instantly sold! However, as I was pulling the guys car back into the parking lot, I pushed the clutch in and heard a loud pop/bang and the clutch lost it's tension. We checked the linkage, and both the long cable and the dog-bone cable were intact and would pull the clutch fork when the pedal was depressed. The owner apologized and I had to drive home empty handed.
I have talked to the guy since and he has told me he is going to deliver the car to me this weekend with the clutch in its current state. I know that I am going to have to replace something inside the bell-housing, SO I am going to more than likely just going to do a complete clutch job. Ok......forgive my long winded-ness.....but this is my immediate solution to get the car on the road.
This leads me to my second question, which is what I have touched on before. I had plans to put a 5.0 tranny in my Project. I have had the input shaft milled down to fit in the smaller pilot bearing. I think the machine shop milled the shaft down too much because the bearing I bought as a gauge for the shop to use has way too much play in the new end. I have had the shaft re-case hardened and technically it is ready to bolt up to the car. I am really concerned that the play will wear out the pilot bearing prematurely. So......If I drop the SVO tranny (which is a t-5) and yank the Input shaft out of it could I put it in the 5.0 tranny with out any trouble?
The desired end result would be to have a 5.0 transmission from the '92 LX with the input shaft from the SVO strapped up to the back of the 2.3t with a 5.0 bellhousing adapter installed.
Sorry for my choppy post, I am trying to make this post while my friends are having a LOUD discussion in the same room as me. If I wasn't clear in my questions, please let me know and I will clarify.
Thanks,
Sam
