Hello guys new to this forum. Lots of information here. Im the owner of a 96 Ranger 2.3 ext cab 4x2 5 speed 357k.I've owned the truck for 22 years and its been the most reliable of all the other vehicles I've owned. Its leaking almost everything although remarkably enough the ac still works. Last week I noticed its starting to blow a bit of oil smoke from the exhaust and it is getting a little tired. Not to mention its almost too slow to be street legal.
Now I've come across an old turbo 2.3 motor and 5 speed trans. Not sure of the year but its quite rusty and has no intercooler. Turbo goes strait to the TB. Upper and lower intake have the inline setup. Also has a distributor and V belts so I'm guessing it's rather old. The plan now is to probably go standalone since I have none of the wireing harness, PCM, intake piping.
There's a few questions I have before I start doing anything with this setup. Im sure I'll have many more but I'll start with these.
#1 Is this engine regardless of age internally the same as any other 2.3T? #2 Which turbo might this have? #3 With the standalone Pimpx, wireing harness, COP/CAS conversion, exhaust manifold flip kit, 120 degree intake manifold setup. Would I be pretty much heading in the right direction?

Wow, that's a lot of miles on that Ranger.
1) They are the same in the ways that matter. The differences are bolt on changes (turbo, serpentine belts, intercooler, square intake, larger injectors, etc.).
2) Garrett (AiResearch) T3.
3) The 96 is OBD2 in stock form so the only way to run a PiMPx/PiMPxs is to replace the stock harness as you outlined. There are obviously some more parts to add to that list (injectors, wideband, boost controller, flip oil lines, etc.) as well as you'll need 3" exhaust, front mount intercooler, etc.

Of course I knew there where things I left off. Yes injectors, thinking 60# should suffice. 3" downpipe. Front mount intercooler I'll plumb myself. I plan on purchasing your wideband. I wasn't planning on keeping any of the stock engine harness as I know it isn't compatible. Here's another question. Not familiar with the rest of the wireing as far as getting my stock gauge cluster to work with this if even possible.

Stock gauge cluster shouldn't be a problem. Tach and coolant temp wires are in the new harness so you just connect those to the stock cluster harness, speedo and alternator should be good to go.

I don't have the engine in my possession yet but I know its a Vbelt accessories system. Not a big fan of that at all. I don't suppose I could transfer my existing single sepentine belt setup to the turbo motor is there?

It's possible but not entirely bolt-on to swap your serpentine setup over. The turbo engines had serpentine setups in 87-88 so those parts are out there too.

Turns out this 2.3T is crap. Went to go pick it up today and it looks like its been sitting outside for 5 years. Turbo is rusted stiff. Rest of engine is no better.

Gotta love that.
So now the question is, do you look for another or do you rebuild your stock engine to turbo specs?

Too much down time and I'd still have to source a bunch of hard to find pieces. I'll attempt to find another turbo motor. Problem here is finding another complete motor.

Where are you located?
Nothing you would need is hard to find, all readily available. I understand the down time issue if it's your daily driver though.

Im in South Florida. I have another car I can use but it gets maybe 10 mpg's if I'm nice to it. The rusty motor I spoke of earlier is still available to me but would need a new turbo and possibly new rings and a hone. The whole things seems rusted stiff. Won't even turn with my half inch impact.

Yeah, I'd likely forget about that one. Probably needs more than a hone to fix rust that bad.

I've sourced another complete engine. More than I was willing to pay but it has everything. It's an 85 engine with "52k". Im gonna say it's probably 152k. Anyway... I wanted the trans with it but way too much money. The M5R1 probably bolts right up right? Likely not the best fit for this application but it's what I have right now.

Yes, your trans bolt right up.

Only thing holding me back right now is the 4k I have in your shopping cart. Decisions, decisions
