I took my block to a machine shop to get it line honed, bore honed etc. and dropped off the aux shaft too just to get it check out to make sure everything is kosher and the machinist brought up an option I had never heard of and had never occurred to me. He is not well versed on the 2300 so I thought I should throw this out there. After looking at it, he asked if I was planning on running a mechanical fuel pump (which I am not) and then suggested that if he machined off the fuel pump lobe, the shaft would run considerably smoother... Thoughts?

It can be machined off. If it made a significant difference Ford would have done it as they spend a ton of money trying to calm down NVH (noise, vibration, harmonics).
