Okay, I have a 96 Ranger original 2.3L and I also have a 1985 Turbo Coupe engine. Is there any way to keep the obd2 setup while running the complete 85 engine? Or would it be easier to run the obd1 setup?

To do it with OBD-2 you have to tune the stock ECU with a flash tuner (SCT for example) or with a Quarterhorse chip. You also have to live in an area where they don't require emissions testing/visual inspection. The older Rangers are easier as there are harnesses, aftermarket ECU's, stock ECU's, etc. that work.

Thank you for the quick reply. I was going to get the obd1 computer and the stand alone harness (bare bones) just to run it for the time being. I have yet to hear this engine run so I want to do that before I dive head first into your full harness to just run obd1

Some of this decision comes down to whether you're planning to run the Ranger dual plug ignition, or convert to the distributor and such from the turbo engine. There are no dual plug harnesses available in the aftermarket but there are harnesses for the distributor setup.

Wanted to run the 8 plug ignition setup on the 4 plug head. I’ve heard it’s been done. I also have a 91 ranger that’s a parts truck that has the dual ignition with one of those in the same location as the distributor. What would I need to add to the obd1 harness from the turbo coupe to run that? I’ll just stick with obd1.

If you're wanting to use a new harness, running a distributor would be WAY easier.
If you want to use a new harness and retain the distributorless ignition system (minus one coil) then you've got to modify the new harness to connect to the DIS module (two connectors), add the crank sensor wiring, and add the cam sync wiring (that's the dummy sensor in the distributor hole on your 91, or the sensor on the auxiliary shaft on your 96). This is not a common process so you'd basically be "on your own" for the wiring mods. I've got diagrams for the 91 dual plug system (stock) that I could send you to assist a bit.

The 91 harness with the DIS ignition and our PiMPx ECU is basically a plug and play deal.

Can I use the 91 ranger ecu and tune it for the turbo setup? Your pimp looks great and easy but I don’t have the money right now.

If turbo swapping the 91 Ranger, if you can't afford a PiMPx then you'd need to get an 87-88 Turbo Coupe ECU, Air Meter, and Injectors and then use that to control the engine. You may be able to use a Quarterhorse chip to tune the Ranger ECU (if someone has a bin file for it) but there isn't much support for that method and trying to tune something without support can be pretty daunting.
