On my way home from work, which is only a few miles, I noticed an odd tone coming from my exhaust that it has never made before and a Slight lack of power. When I got home, I was hearing a loud clacking that was in sync with the odd exhaust tone coming from the valve cover that increased with RPM.I pulled the valve cover, but I did not see anything visibly concerning. I did not get into the throttle, it did not over heat, and AFRs where good. Is it possible I have a bad lifter, or something else in the valve train? I do still have the slider cam followers.

You can have a bad lifter, and you can have a follower come off the lifter or valve and lodge itself sideways where it will drag on the cam (clack) and also prevent the valve from opening (odd tone, low power).

Interesting, I will have another look in there and test the lifters now that I am home from work.
Thanks.

You pretty much got it spot on. The peak of the cam lobe has a flat spot on it now. Got any suggestions for a cam that does not require any machine work to the head?
