Good afternoon all. I recently re-joined the SVO and Fox ranks. I've had an 86 9L SVO that made around 270 at stock boost levels, an 85 5.0 Coupe, 85 5.0 RS Capri, 82 5.0 RS Capri and 03 Mach 1. I have been into Mustangs and 92-96 F series trucks for years. I just bought a barn find...ish 1C 86 SVO that will be getting a going through but is a rock solid car. In bringing it around, I've come across a few things that need doing beyond the popped head gasket. The factory fuel pulse damper is MIA and someone stuck a typical Ford fuel filter in its place. How mandatory are these? I can't find anything for inventory on them anywhere and I'm not sure what part numbers cross over. Otherwise its getting ARP studs and a Cometic .027 head gasket, some tires and whatever attrition takes once its on the road.
The end goal is a "sympathetic" restoration. A Gnari manifold since it randomly has an E3 manifold on it, but everything else is 86 spec. Big VAM, 2x2 intake and brown tops. Boost regulator and adjustable FPR, 3" downpipe and.....that honestly may be it! I have the wings, the lower is off being repaired and I'm fixing the upper bi plane. I'm actually located about 11 miles South of Stinger so you'll be hearing from me. More often than my wife would care for.
It lives in the shop with a big fat shiny 93 two tone old man tan 4x4 ext. cab long bed 460 F250 and a 2016 Fiesta ST.

Welcome!
The damper isn't mandatory at all. You can just connect the line directly to the rail with no damper or filter.
If that headgasket is an MLS version then I'd highly suggest not doing it. Those gaskets require a MUCH finer surface finish than a regular gasket so if you're not pulling the engine apart and having it machined specifically for an MLS, it will not seal properly (it will either seep coolant, or allow combustion gases to go where they shouldn't go). ARP studs are also difficult to find currently (unless it's changed very recently).
11 miles South means you're around Bonner Springs?

It IS an MLS. What do you suggest? I'm just across the bridge and South of De Soto. Of all places, Amazon had the 151-4202 stud kit in stock.
I think I ran a Fel Pro 1035 in my old white SVO. I melted that on the rollers at MC Racing during an F body Dyno day. Oops.

That MLS would also raise the compression ratio which isn't really ideal when we're stuck with 91 octane around here. If you've got a good tune on it then you don't need anything special. The $9 8993 headgasket has supported 600hp to the wheels before (or you can blow it at stock power levels with too much timing, boost, or going lean). If a HG blows without any of these issues, the deck or head are warped (or studs weren't retorqued after a heat cycle). So I'd say run an 8993 or a 1035.

I appreciate the heads up. No pun intended. I ordered an 8993 last night actually. My old 86 melted because the walbro pump dropped pressure on the Dyno.
I imagine in the next few months I'll be putting in an order with you. Probably wing supports and a downpipe for starters. I'll 95% sure I ran into you about 3-4 years ago up off Johnson Drive. You had a maroon 84/5 SVO out and I was stopping at the liquor store in my 93 F250 and geeked out over the SVO. I actually bought the black car here in De Soto if you can believe it. The previous owner wanted to LS swap the car.

Ah yes, I do remember that. We moved to Basehor last year so we're a little farther North than we were before.
Crazy when an SVO sort of falls in your lap like that. Good to hear it didn't get LS swapped.

I'm pretty sure I read up on your experimenting with a 460 tow pig that is/was very close to my truck. Its likely the reason mine will end up with an adjustable fuel pressure regulator on it.
This car is an ex Texas car. The paint wet sanded and shined up but it rough. I looked at it a few months ago when I caught wind of it. I just wanted to make sure all the SVO stuff was present and there was no rust. The only rust on the car is a spot about the size of a nickel on the drivers quarter under the belt trim extension. Someone rattle canned the hood so at some point the whole car will get repainted black. I'm pretty pumped to get it back on the road and wander out to a few Cars and Coffee events with it. I've taken the truck a few times but its like mooring a battleship up around expensive pleasure boats.

That was probably Boport that was messing with the 460 tow pig. He's had a few of them and has ported them, added a supercharger, etc.
Lucky that it's mostly rust free. Normally cars that just sit tend to be more rusty than those that get driven.

After I posted that I second guessed myself. You are correct.
The thing that threw me the most about this car is that the stock shifter, catalytic converter and intake box are still there. That cat has to just be a mess at 37 years old. The head is going to come off in the next few weeks and it really is hard to wrangle in the scope creep.
My first 86 was quite far from stock. Big cam, big valve head, wiseco pistons, empty upper intake and knife edged lower, ported E6 manifold, Spearco front mount, 3" exhaust from the turbo back, BBK springs, 97 Cobra wheels, 255lph Walbro, aeromotive regulator. At 15-16psi it made 270 and over 300ft-lbs. I always wanted to turn it up to about 20psi and see what gave way first but had to drive it every day.

That's about all the power those stock injectors will support so it's good you didn't turn it up any more.
Scope creep is hard on these cars because adding power is so easy.

That takes me to a new and uncharted world since I played with SVOs back when it was Andy Black, Mark Covey, me and a few others that actually liked them! Once you outrun the 35lb low impedance stuff, how do you adapt to running higher volume high impedance stuff? Will the stock VAM/ECU tolerate the injector change?
I should go bug my brother about this crap. He has a 1400whp twin turbo 355 Dart block Windsor in an 86 RS Capri. He probably knows a bit.

That's when it's time for a PiMPx ECU and ditching the VAM. Stock ECU can't handle larger injectors without overfueling at idle/low RPM and other issues (VAM is maxed out before the injectors anyway).

Sounds like my idea of a 25-260whp car is about right then! I'm sure it will get zestier later on but for the time being it just needs to outrun the Fiesta ST.
