could one not have just machined out crank for 5.0 roller bearing?

No, the bearing is larger than the centering hub of the crank.

could a torque converter company machine the end of a torque converter made for an AOD to fit the 2.3 crank?

All of our flywheels (manual trans) drop ship directly from SPEC (who stock's them). Any flexplates (auto trans) mentioned in this thread are custom pieces that may or may not have ever been made before by any company and therefore nobody stocks them.

ok I am alittle confused on this but I am going to do whatever I have to to put a 4r70w in my car.... I know I will need a custom flexplate and torque converter... what am confused about is the flexplate... I know the torque converter bolt pattern can be either 10-7/8'' or 11-1/2'' that I am clear on... I am unsure on the offset of the flexplate... would the same offset as the AOD one mentioned above be correct for the 4R70w? just wanna make sure I get this right lol
thanks for any help!

The offset would be a product of where it needs to be for the engine with an adapter plate, and where it needs to be located in the bellhousing. Short of measuring this yourself, or find someone who's already done so, you'll probably struggle to find this info.

well looks like I'll just have to pull it apart bolt up the 4r70w with the torque converter installed then take measurements and then have flexplate made... is this correct? as far as I know no one else has tried to put a 4r70w behind a 4-cylinder.... how much clearance should there be between the torque converter and the flexplate? I know if you get them too close or too far apart it will damage the tranny and the torque converter... when I get this figured out I will definitely be doing a write up on it with lots of pictures!! lol

Sounds correct. I'd try to stick to stock clearances whenever possible. Until you mock it up, you won't really know how big the battle will be.
