Ok I figured I would start a new thread. The engine starts and runs but it sits at 3000 rpm. When I tune it down to about 1000 rpm the throttle does not work at all. Does that indicate a vaccum leak? Any ideas?

Ok the timing is off. I have an adjustable cam pully and it has a circle on it. when i set the timing to that spot it does not work right. how are the valves supposed to look when the crank is at top dead center. i am setting it blindly

Put a stock cam gear on it, line everything up, then put the adjustable gear on it and mark "TDC"...the marks are never right.
How were you turning down the idle?

I was using the distributor because the idle adjustment screw is backed off all the way

Will any 2.3 or 2.5 cam gear do?

Ok I verified the timing marks are correct. The engine won't start unless I severly retard the engine. ?

Ok I verified the timing marks are correct. The engine won't start unless I severly retard the engine. ? That means the timing isn't right when it is "verified correct". Put the crank at TDC, cam pointer pointing at cam timing marks (or the center of the auxiliary pulley bolt if you don't have the timing marks), remove distributor cap and point rotor to #1 plug wire location. Put cap on, pull spout and start the engine, put a timing light on it and adjust to 10 degrees BTDC, tighten distributor bolt, plug in spout, make sure timing increases when spout goes in, you're done. Yes, any 2.3/2.5 cam gear will work.

my timing light is on the plug wire for cylender 1 and it is showing i have the timing at 10degrees btdc and when it starts it diesels and has no throttle response. Also does this car require any amount of backpressure to start. right now the only part of an exhaust system i have is the elbow with the oxygen senser. There is nothing past that. was planning on putting on a full exhaust system when i am done but did not know if it required any. Thanks for the help

Did you put the spout advance plug back into the tfi wiring after setting the timing to 10 degrees? Without it the timing doesn't advance and the car is a dog.

Spout plug is back in. It sits at 2500 does not boost and when u throttle up hard it backfires out the exhaust. If u lightly accelerate it is fine up all the way up but it builds no boost.

Is timing advancing when you put the spout back in?
What throttle body?
Backfiring indicates either spark plug wires are out of order or timing is way off.

It is the throttle body from my 1993 2.3l. I will get the rest of the details in the morning

Unplug the IAC valve on the throttle body. Where does it idle then?

That helped a lot. It is idling at 1000 rpm and sounds great but has no power in gear and backfires while reving in neutral
